 About Play In A Day

Also known as “Challenge 24,” PIAD was first hosted by the Waverly Theatre Company in 2001. HATS and Mitcham Theatre Groups conducted similar events between 2004 and 2007. The Sherbrooke Theatre Company hosted PIAD each year since 2008 and jointly with Peridot in 2016. This year it will be held under the auspices of Peridot Theatre Inc at the Unicorn Theatre at Mount Waverley Secondary College. Twenty four hours later, at 8pm Saturday 4th March, the curtain opens! It’s a thrilling ride, because none of the shows will have ever been seen before (nor may they ever be seen again)!

  How It Works

The event begins at 7.30pm on Friday 3rd March, at The Unicorn Theatre Lechte Road Mount Waverley. It attracts approximately 40+ people from all walks of life, all of whom successfully applied to be a part of PIAD. Most have never met before, and the range of skills and experience varies from the polished performer to the total novice. A random ballot is held, and teams of 6 to 7 people are formed, consisting of a writer, a director and 4 or 5 actors – their collective goal to write, direct and perform six short 10-12 minute plays, all connected by a theme. In years past, the themes have included the Ten Commandments, the four Seasons, Seven Deadly Sins, Obsessions, Deadlines, Celebrity and Faith, Hope & Charity, Fairy Tales, just to name a few. After a short time getting to know each other, the teams toss around all manner of ideas to stir the creative juices of the writer. By 10pm, the teams disperse to allow the writer to start writing their innovative masterpiece. Most write throughout the night. The next morning (Saturday 4th March) at 7am, the directors meet with their respective writers to discuss their scripts, and then at 8am, the actors gather and rehearsals commence.

 Expression Of Interest

Participation is STRICTLY LIMITED to 42 people – six writers, six directors and 30 actors. You are strongly recommended to apply as soon as possible.
